What's to say?

I'm happy to report that toxicfur started home today. Turns out to be much cheaper to rent a truck one-way than a car, so she's driving a truck. With a bit of furniture and stuff in it, and a dog.

One of her grad-school friends lives in Norfolk, not that far off the beaten track, so she's staying the night there. I got a call as I was doing the pizza thing to say she'd arrived safely. It's good, having a place to stop over, because it reduces the temptation to do it all in one night. Oh, and the truck rental (for cheap) is for up to 5 days, so no hurry.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, we're getting along. I get a bit overwhelmed, sometimes, at just how needy the dog is. He'd like nothing better than to play with me all day long; or, if I must be gone part of the time, then certainly every waking moment while I'm home. It was rainy this morning, and he hates going out in the rain. But it stopped, mostly, by evening, and we went for a bit of a walk. It's cooler, though, tending toward snow tomorrow, so we did it pretty quickly. And then played tug-of-war with some of his toys in the house.

I do hope the writers' strike is over soon. There's a whole lotta nuthin' on television lately.

I'm slowly getting back into things at work. There's been a round of meetings the last couple days, which help refocus the mind on whatever it was I was doing, and how it fits in to the Grand Scheme of Things (to say nothing of Stuff).

My time keeper came around several times yesterday, proposing various schemes for accounting for all the leave I took. I think we finally ended up with a good one, which preserves most of my annual leave, by dipping into my immense amount of saved-up sick leave. And it all seems to be perfectly legal, if you read the correct part of the handbook.

I miss my honey. :-(

So, the latest WFC has six stories and (as of this writing) 14 votes. If you haven't read and voted yet, please do; at least one of the stories is really quite worth the read. And no, it's not the one I contributed to. Maybe the idea is getting tired, and we should let it rest a while?

For a while now, I've thought it'd be cool to have a place to post all the stuff you kinda sorta worked on for one fun challenge or another, but didn't finish in time, or at all. That Tom Waits cover for MFC2 (or was that ZZ Top?). A cool photo of whatever, that still needs some photoshopping or color balance. A little idea for a story that never went anywhere. An algorithm that's just too cool to not work quite right.

So whaddya think? /etc/fun? or not?

Did I mention that I miss my partner? Not as much, I'm expecting, as she misses me, and home, and the critters and her normal life here.

so glad to hear she's on the way! by clock (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 09:49:11 PM EST
once you're in a groove with a partner and family, it's tough to break out.  i had to go to a management dinner one night last week and i didn't see the dude all day.  it nearly broke my heart.  but i was happy to hear that he missed me, though that was rough on his mom.  apparently, when he realized that i wasn't going to be home on time to provide him with his variety, he freaked out and cried himself to sleep.  cold comfort for daddy to be missed like that.

that's my way of saying: it's going to feel good for everyone to be home.  it's where we belong most of the time.

oh...and i like the /etc/fun idea.  i use journler for that, but a husi version might be nice.

That's fantastic.

I'd probably dump a couple of pics and a song in there myself

You did real good.

:^)

Irony: ammo says it's time. Tom is blocked.

well, if that's Norfolk va she probably drove by me an hour or two ago. Hope traffic treats her well on the drive home. Taking the bay/bridge tunnel instead of 95 up through VA ?

a very nice drive, just hope the wind here doesn't cause restrictions on the CBBT. Lots of small towns to drive through, just watch out for speed traps etc on 13. And the tolls in DE ;)

Just got a call by ana (2.00 / 0) #9 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 10:06:51 AM EST
from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (prior to the tunnel part), where she pulled off at a scenic overlook to let the dog stretch her legs (and pee in the bay).

Seems she got off a bit later than expected (see under talktalktalktalk for a picture of her friend in Norfolk), with some useful advice abotu I-95 in the NYC area from somebody who travels kind of a lot (works for major hotel chain).

3:30 from a rest stop in South Jersey. Yes, 256, on the New Jersey Turnpike. Which will put her in New York City close to rush hour. I hope she holes up someplace til after that's over.

Adventure in moving... by ana (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 08:20:36 PM EST
...or, not.

Got a panicked call around 6:45 saying toxicfur had turned onto a "passenger cars only" road without realizing it, and that her truck (10'6" high) was higher than the clearance under a bridge (9'10" or something such). She called 911, and was waiting for the friendly cop to come tell her what to do. Oh, and cell phone battery is running very low. Kbye.

7:15, another call, with a much calmer toxicfur on the other end, saying the cop hadn't even given her a ticket, but had pointed out that the bridge in question was arched, and helped her under it, because the middle was substantially higher than the lowest point, where they'd measured the clearance. We agreed she'd done the right thing, calling 911, and the cop didn't even give her a ticket. So, whew. Rusti even wagged her tail at him.

At 7:35, she was back on I-95, just crossed into Connecticut, with all the outbound NY commuter traffic. "It's a parking lot," she explained, "so I don't feel bad talking on the phone." Herring on #husi had suggested buying a cell phone charger at a gas station, if such things are available in USia (as they apparently are in UKia), so I txted her that suggestion a few minutes before she called.

We talked through the route chosen by the GPS machine, and it seems (to me, who's never been in lower CTia) to make sense. She'll stop soon-ish and try to get a charger and/or plug in the cell phone for a bit.

So it's looking like midnight-ish. Which is fine. Safe is more important than early.

9:00 by ana (2.00 / 0) #15 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 09:05:41 PM EST
and back on the road, after a stopover which involved feeding the dog the meat patty out of a fast food hamburger, and some recharging of the cell phone, there being no car-charger for sale that fit her brand of cell phone. And some time to metabolize the adrenaline, and let the traffic dissipate somewhat.

So, perhaps midnight, or a bit after. :-D

Re: strike, I hope it's over soon too, but I think this season is shot. Takes too long for them to ramp up production again. However, Sarah Connor Chronicles is not at all bad for strike fare. Ass-kicking robots, what's not to love? (Well, except when they do that stupid T3 thing and just smash each other into walls, and through them ... but yeah.)

And, I'm not sure about WFC, the tradition, but I think we ought to stick a fork in WFC 8. It's done. We'll leave the tradition in the winner's hands.

is in fact interesting. And, hey, Summer Glau. :-) And women who kick ass, without even bothering to take names.

A genius bit of casting. And as a bonus, it inspired this post.
